My name is Mihai Bocsaru, Chief Web Developer and Movable Type Consultant at PRO IT Service since 2002. I've been working in web development since 1997, but I've started working in the blogging industry a bit later.

Way back in December 2002 I've discovered Movable Type and I've started working with it for various publishing projects, including blogs and online communities.

Over time, working on over 300 Web site projects, all focused around the movable type publishing platform, I've gathered a very strong experience in blogs and blog development.

In an attempt to use this experience on helping people better leverage their blogs potential, starting from 2007 I've started to offer a service called 'Blog Survey'.

Basically, I've established a precise set of blog features that a blog should embed in order to leverage as much as possible its potential.

The main goals I've had in mind on establishing this set of features are:

optimize the blog as much as possible for search engines;

have search engines index your content within 24 to 72 hours from publication;

protect your blog against spam;

give your visitors the means to interact with your Weblog;

make them feel part of and build a community around your blog;

increase your page views and earnings (earnings, only if you also monetize your Web site).

If you would like to make sure your blog is following the trend established consecrated by strong names in the blogosphere and to increase your overall blog potential, get in touch and order a 'Blog Survey'.

I'm going to personally review your blog and put together a document in which to outline the areas where you blog has space for improvements.

After receiving this 'Blog Survey' you may like to implement together those blog improvements that I'm going to recommend you.

In my experience of over 7 years now as blog consultant and movable type developer, I've been asked to provide solutions for optimizing a blog for search engines.

Among the solutions I've always gladly recommended, I should mention the search engine optimization meta fields.

If you have any technical knowledge about Web Publishing, you should know that a Web page from a technical point of view is made of two sections: one called meta and the other one body.

While the meta section is mainly for the search engines, the body section contains what you are actually seeing on an internet browser, which means the page content.

The meta section contains a couple of meta tags with information addresses almost exclusively to search engines. Only one meta tag is available also for the Web site visitor in the browser, that tag being the Meta Title (the Web page title displayed on the browser top left corner).

My proposal to you is to have me setup and configure for you a number of three movable type custom fields. You will be instructed on how to discover and embed on your articles Web pages valuable keywords and key phrases. These valuable keywords and key phrases are going to be available to and crawled by Google and other search engines.

This information will not be visible to your Web site visitors just because its function is exclusively to facilitate you to optimize for higher search engines positioning.

Meta Title

By default, movable type is configured to use your article title as browser title on that article Web page. Basically, movable type takes the article title and publishes it as META Title for your article individual Web page.

While this strategy is not bad at all, you may want sometimes to declare a slightly different META Title than your article title, in an attempt to get the most attention you can in search engines listing.

My proposal to you is to have a custom field for META Title, and if you enter something in there to have this something as META Title on the article individual Web page. In case you are not going to fill out the META Title for a given article, movable type will use the default setup and will fill it out with the article title.

Meta Description

This meta description works like a one paragraph summary about your overall article.

While Google seems to not take into consideration this field anymore, there are plenty of other search engines that are still relying on this field, such as for instance Yahoo! and MSN.

You are going to have a custom field for entering this one phrase summary. In case you won't bother about adding it, movable type will be configured to embed there for you the most recent 60 words from your article Body text.

Meta Keywords

This is the third and last search engine optimization custom field I'm going to propose you.

You are supposed to enter here a couple of keywords or key phrases separated by comma, the scope being to have search engines associate those specific keywords with your article content.

What if you are not going to fill out this field for a specific article? In such a circumstance, movable type will check if you've associated any tags for that article and if you did, it will use those tags as Meta Keywords for you.

I'm sure you find these three meta fields worth implementing, but you may be wondering:

- Is there any intelligent way of grabbing valuable keywords and key phrases on a specific topic?

As a professional solution provider I definitely have a positive answer for you.

You don't have to strive yourself trying to think about as many keywords and key phrases that may be related to your content.

Consider using any or all of the following tools. You can use Overture for instance not only for collecting keywords or key phrases but for seeing also how many times these keywords / key phrases have been searched for recently.

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

http://www.wordtracker.com/

Though this technique you are going to be able to rapidly get within the major search engines top 10 positioning on the keywords / key phrases you are interested on.

As Movable Type consultant I've tried to offer as many movable type related services as possible. However, I must confess that I didn't think about such a service on my own.

Case Study (eCommConf.com)

Lee Dryburgh from eCommConf.com came to us asking to clone his movable type development from his official server and host it under one of our web hosting servers at Pair Networks, Inc.

Therefore, Lee had the official movable type project at www.ecommmedia.com and the cloned version at www.ecomm2008.com.

Lee didn't limit at having us clone his project, but contracted us to also refresh his cloned version every week by taking the updates from the official implementation and setting them up also on our server.

At the moment we're hosting the Ecomm 2009 Conference Web site clone at www.ecomm2009.com, while the official implementation is available at www.Ecommconf.com. If, between autumn 2008 and December 31st, 2008 we've contracted to backup the project every 2 weeks, for the period January the 1st, 2009 and March the 6th, 2009 when the conference itself is going to start we've contracted to refresh the cloned version every week.

The idea behind having an emergency copy of an official movable type implementation hosted on a completely different server has a few major advantages.

1. Rescue

From experience I could say that cloning your movable type implementation elsewhere could help you restore your official version, in case something wrong happens with it.

We've had Lee Dryburgh from eCommConf.com asking us for help to restore his official implementation. He had someone trying to do some changes which screwed his Web site and so he asked us to restore.

2. Development

Starting with Lee Dryburgh, we've used the cloned projects we're hosting to do further developments which, once confirmed, we could port on the official release.

3. Security

Let's assume that your main hosting provider is going to be hacked and consequently your movable type project is affected. Having a second hosting provider could allow you to either restore your project or switch the server provider without any extra efforts.

4. Switch

In case of a serious failure with the official version (hosting server failure or anything else) one could simply switch the project to the cloned version hosted with us.

5. Ongoing Maintenance

As very experienced movable type providers we guarantee that what we are hosting will be available in any circumstances.

To avoid any incident we're automatically creating a full backup of our customers web sites data, as well as mysql database(s) which allows us to restore a customer's project within minutes in case of any unpredictable disaster.

Movable Type Custom Theme Development

I was going to call this service 'Movable Type Theme Design' because we sometimes are redesigning a customer movable type web site interface.

However, since other times we are just integrating the customer main web site design within their blog, by keeping the movable type css structure, which is more like 'Movable Type Theme Integration', I've decided to call this service 'Movable Type Theme Development'.

We're addressing this service to those movable type bloggers that are intending to change their weblog design to something more professional, better organized, or simply more in tune with what they like at other bloggers' websites.

Other potential customers for us, are also those Web site owners would intend to also start a blog for their Web site as a way to attract people and create a community around their Web sites. You may know that these days a blog is considered an excellent marketing tool for businesses.

For these customers, we're glad to implement their general web site design to their blogs. Depending on the budget available we will be glad to do this job with or without keeping the movable type default CSS structure.

During our six years experience as Movable Type Consultancy provider, we've sometimes had to go beyond the movable type capabilities and code hacks or plugins which to allow us to fully satisfy our customers' demands.

What does it entitle developing a Movable Type plugin?

In order to be able to develop a movable type plugin, one has to be able to understand the movabletype core functions and to be fluent in Perl (Practical Extraction and Report Language) and CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programming.

Plugins we've developed

Among the dozens movable type plugins we've coded, I feel like mentioning a couple:

Trade Pub

Biz Report, one of our long term customers, one day asked us for a way to grab items from a TradePub.com XML file and populate two separate blogs, one with white papers, the other with magazines.

TradePub.com is an online subscription service provider since 1994. It goes beyond magazines, providing a sophisticated repository of content for professionals in over 33 industry verticals, with extensive reach through 1000's of B2B partner sites worldwide.

We've initially coded the plugin for movable type v3.x series, together with some custom fields which to accommodate more data per entry.

Later, prior to upgrading Biz Reports's movable type publishing platform to movable type v4.x series, we've recoded the plugin to make it compatible with this new release.

Paginated Comments

During autumn 2007, we've had a request to develop a movable type plugin for Metro International, London.

Metro was using movable type enterprise v1.52 and the goal with this plugin was to paginate comments in blocks of 10 comments per page, which to be later used in an AJAX paginated comments facility.

Images (Extracting, Display and Filtering out)

Around spring 2008, Metro came back and asked us for a way to extract all the images associated with an entry and then to display them on the right side of the text, one after another, resized to a specific width and also linked to the image full size version.

What was even more interesting was the fact that Metro's bloggers were allowed to publish up to 5 images from a front end custom interface, as well as upload any number of additional images from inside the movable type admin environment.

Given this assignment, we went ahead and developed this 'images' plugin, successfully extracting any images from both the front end and back end publishing interfaces and then displaying them on the indicated space, according to the specifications provided (thumbnail creation on the fly etc.).

Furthermore, we've also coded (as part of this plugin) a way to filter our these extracted images from inside the Entry Body and Extended Entry fields, in order to not get the same images displayed once within the content, and once on the side.

External Links

I'm not going to write about all the plugins we've developed for Metro International, but I feel like mentioning another one.

'External Links' is a plugin that automatically adds a parameter to any link going to an external site.

In technical terms, the plugin is looking for links inside the fields specified by the movable type admin (it can be set at which fields to look and operate), compares the URL from the link to the current blog URL and if they're not the same, it automatically inserts the target="_blank" link parameter that is necessary for the external link to open in a new browser window.

This little plugin was pretty useful for Metro in order to avoid having visitors leaving the site when clicking an external link.

Movable Type System Templates Refresh

Shiny Media, known as the largest United Kingdom blog publishing network, and another customer of ours, had quite some serious problems after having another movable type consultancy provider upgrade their movable type installation from v3.x to v4.x.

This other provider did the upgrade improperly and didn't even bother to check and see if the core movable type features are continuing to work.

Shiny Media came to us kindly asking to have us troubleshoot a series of movable type errors they were getting on their large (more than 40) blogs installation, which were preventing their editors from being able to do their job effortlessly.

Among these errors:

- editors were uploading different images, but movable type was always inserting an old (always the same) image on their posts, instead of inserting the image just uploaded;

- visitors were getting an ugly error when trying to preview their comments;

- and more…

We've analyzed the situation and figured out that the issue was with the movable type system templates. Basically, instead of having the default 5 system templates, the Shiny Media blogs had only two templates.

The issue complicated a bit considering that there is no way to add a system template in Movable Type from within the admin interface.

For being able to fix this problem, we've coded a plugin which checked all the blogs and setup the default movable type system templates.

The plugin successfully solved the problems Shiny Media experienced.

Do you need any movable type plugin development?

You may like to build something that is not available by default in Movable Type.

Send your specifications to us and we will be delighted to consider coding a custom plugin for your needs.

Mihai Bocsaru, Owner, Chief Web Developer and Movable Type Consultant at PRO IT Service S.R.L., company specialized on movable type consultancy services, publishing platforms development and general web sites development is known as what some people are calling a movable type guru

What is a Guru?

According to Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru] a guru is:

"a person who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority in a certain area, and uses it to guide others"

What is a Movable Type Guru?

Following Wikipedia's definition, a "movable type guru" is a very well qualified movable type service provider which has a strong experience and authority regarding the movable type publishing platform.

Having worked since 1997 on web development and from 2002 on blogging consultancy and movable type development, Mihai Bocsaru gained a long term working experience in the field and so he is associated with the terms "web guru" or "movable type guru" or "blog development guru".

Do you need a Movable Type Guru?

Whenever you need movable type work it's strongly recommend to use a movable type guru for a series of reasons among which I would mention:

a. Experience

A movable type guru is in essence a very experienced movable type service provider

b. Quality

High quality standards is the main attribute for being a movable type guru

c. Cost

Hiring a movable type guru should always be a better investment than working with a less experienced movable type provider, and that is because a guru has so much experience that deploying your work takes him/her less time than to a less experienced provider.

Here at PRO IT Service, Mihai trained a couple of other people that joined the team over the years to support our customers at excellent standards as movable type gurus, but to also take into account offering movable type consultancy services at very affordable pricing.

If you are in need for a movable type guru contact us at anytime. We would love to work on your movable type project offering you our experience, talent and cost effective services.

You may like to call it "typepad2movabletype", "typepad to movabletype", "type pad to movable type" or any way you like :)

TypePad to Movable Type is a service that, as movable type consultancy providers, we are happy to offer to any Type Pad blogger in need for a better publishing experience.

As you might be already aware, both TypePad and Movable Type are products based on the same technology, created by Six Apart, company based in San Francisco, USA.

The main difference between these two products is that TypePad is a fee-based hosted service, while Movable Type is actually a software that you download and run on your own web server or host (obviously, an account you create with a hosting provider for a very reasonable fee).

If you are a blogger and you are working with TypePad for some time, you already know that TypePad is quite limited when it comes to enhance your weblog with extra features or custom development.

In other words, TypePad allows you do implement certain features (quite limited) on your TypePad driven Web site, while with Movable Type apart from the fact that you have from the very beginning more features available, through the use of already created movable type plugins or movable type custom development, when talking about enhancing your online project, the sky is the limit.

As movable type guru and blogging solution provider, I would strongly recommend any TypePad user to consider migrating to Movable Type for more flexibility.

Imagine that with Movable Type anything you could think about, or anything you see appealing at your competitors could be achieved. There is nothing that could not be done in my working experience as movable type developer and I'm glad that the team mates I've trained to help me deliver more and more work here at PRO IT Service are sharing the same vision.

What does switching from TypePad to Movable Type involve?

Switching from TypePad to Movable Type involves the following operations:

1. Domain

Unless you already have one, you should consider registering a domain for your blog.

In terms of cost, registering a .com domain is less than 10 USD per year.

I've felt like mentioning also this aspect, as most of the TypePad blogs are not running based on the blogger domain, but based on the typepad.com main domain.

For instance, assuming that your blog is currently reachable at http://fashioncopious.typepad.com/

You will have to consider looking for and registering your own domain.

In this sample, the customer may consider registering a domain which to contain his site name, like for instance "fashioncopious.com" for as low as 9.69 USD with http://www.namecheap.com/.

2. Hosting Service

You should create an account with a hosting provider which supports movable type. In theory any hosting provider should support this publishing platform. However, in practice, some hosting providers do not support movable type as their low cost service doesn't provide well equipped servers.

When judging what hosting provider to use, you should have in mind in one hand to make sure that the service you are analyzing supports movable type and on the other that this hosting service is also having a movable type department offering you support anytime needed.

Having these important aspects in mind, we've partnered with Pair Networks Inc. from Pittsburg, PA, USA to offer you an excellent movable type hosting service at an affordable pricing and at excellent service standards.

As you may imagine, we wouldn't recommend our customers a non-reliable service! We've chosen Pair for a series of reasons, among which is their 13 years experience as hosting providers, the fact that they have a movable type team that users could rely on, as well as the fact that they are among the hosting providers recommended by Six Apart, the company who created movable type.

Last but not least, we're using Pair Networks Inc. services ourselves since 2001 and we've recommended it to hundreds of customers from small to mid and large organizations.

To make our hosting solution even more appealing, outside the Pair Networks standard service, we are also offering you two very important extra benefits, one consisting in weekly entire project backup (both web site files as well as mysql database), the other being 50% discounted movable type upgrades (priced regularly at 100 USD and discounted for you at as low as 50 USD).

Contracting any other movable type development or bringing us a new customer would even qualify you for cost free movable type upgrade service, whereby the take the expense on our end.

For more information about our movable type hosting service you may consult:

http://www.pro-it-service.com/en/movabletype_hosting.html

Hosting your movable type weblog with us will cost you 180 USD / year.

This cost may be higher in case you're project is very large and it receives a very high traffic.

3. Movable Type Installation

You shouldn't be very technical to install movable type on your server, but you should definitely be familiar with terms such as unarchiving the movable type product, creating a mysql database from inside your hosting account control panel and following the movable type installation instructions.

However, to avoid spending time on this operation, and in case you're an excellent blogger but less of a technical person, you may like to hire a movable type consultant to install movable type for you.

In case you decide hosting with us (remember that we're partnering with Pair Networks for this service, so the web server will be located in Pittsburg, USA, at Pair head quarters), we will be delighted to award you the installation service at absolutely no cost at all.

Otherwise, if you decide to host with any other provider, we're available to install movable type for you for a onetime 50 USD fee.

4. Exporting Your TypePad Content

You've written content on your TypePad Weblog and I'm pretty confident that you've also uploaded and displayed images within your blog entries.

This being the case, exporting your TypePad content means exporting all your entries as well as all your images. While exporting your entries is simple as there is an option on TypePad which does this job for you, exporting also the images is a tricky job.

As experienced service provider we have the knowledge to export the images for you.

IMPORTANT:

While switching the UK's leading commercial blog publisher, Shiny Media Company Web site, as well as the Shiny Media BranDish.TV blog project from TypePad to Movable Type I've been swamped to realize that another consultancy company provider switched some other typepad projects for Shiny Media prior to us, but without seriously addressing two items:

Articles URLs;

Tags;

Indeed, the option to export these parameters is not available on TypePad, but a reliable movable type consultant should always do its best to find solutions and offer a professional service.

I've coded a way to extract this information from TypePad and so I've maintained the two above mentioned Shiny Media projects individual articles URLs preventing the client from losing a lot of traffic and being penalized by Google for broken links.

Porting the tags saved quite an important amount of work that the Shiny Media Editors have made along the years.

You may like to hire me for your typepad to movable type transfer as an assurance that your project would be addressed with competence and professionalism.

5. Exporting Your Design and Widgets

The term ‘exporting' is not quite proper here, as there is no option to export your design or your sidebar widgets. This service is more like grabbing your design and inventorying your widgets for being then replicated on your Movable Type implementation.

6. Importing Your Content in Movable Type

Importing your content in movable type means importing the articles you've exported from within TypePad, as well as uploading the images extracted from TypePad to your movable type installation.

7. Recreating Your Web Site

The job of recreating your weblog consist of plugging your design to movable type as it was extracted from TypePad (a little bit adapted for movable type) as well as replicating your sidebar widgets, this last operation taking a bit more time depending on the very widgets you're running on your project.

8. Pointing Your Domain to Your Weblog

Once the movable type implementation is completed and everything you've had on TypePad is restored, you have to point your domain to the server where your web site is hosted.

In technical terms this means that you should get from your hosting provider something that is called DNS (domain name server). In fact, you will get two DNS settings, as they are always available as two distinct values.

Then, you will have to login to the service you've used to register your domain (called a domain registrar; i.e. www.namecheap.com) and update your domain DNS settings with the two DNS values you've gathered from your hosting provider.

In a simpler discourse, this means that your domain registrar will update the domain so that it points to your server and thus to your blog.

When you will point your browser to say www.yourdomainhere.com you will be able to see your blog.

9. Preserve SEO and Traffic

This last aspect should be treated very seriously, as we've seen some folks limiting to just switching in between the two platforms, without considering to also bring the traffic from the typepad resource to the movable type one, as well as to use the technical means to avoid having the blogger being penalized by search engines for duplicated content.

As highly qualified and experienced providers running this service, your Web site visitors would be preserved, as well as your incoming links and search engines positioning (your ranking in Google, Yahoo, MSN and any other search engines).

It is really a very bad idea to leave this technical aspect at the mercy of a less experienced service provider as this is the key behind your project. No matter how good your content is, losing the traffic and trust you've build over a period of time both in the eyes of your readers, as well as the search engines is like committing suicide as blogger.

You will never have bad surprises using our typepad to movable type service.

Upon request, our other customers for this service could testify it for you.

These 9 (nine) operations are the key behind migrating a typepad based Web site from TypePad to Movable Type and we would like to once again state our availability to help you run this procedure safely and with absolutely perfect results.

Your movable type implementation with be an absolutely identical weblog to your TypePad resource.

As soon as these steps are completed, you're weblog will run backed on the movable type publishing platform and from there on you won't have to worry about being or not being able to build up absolutely any feature or widget that comes to your mind.

Hire us for migrating your typepad blog to movable type at any time!

PRO IT Service is very delighted to be working in the new media industry.

We've evolved over the years from building static like Web sites way back in 1997 (the company is founded later on 2002) to building up the portals, blogs and online communities we're developing at this time.

There are so many wonderful moments each and every day. I must say there is no day to not get to discover something new about how to improve things, what the tendencies are and what other features we could be developing.

Since early 2003 we've devoted about 80-90% of our time to developing static-like Web sites, blogs and online communities using the Movable Type Publishing Platform developed by Six Apart, a wonderful team out there is San Francisco, USA.

Asking any of our customers, they will testify we've really made a passion for using movable type for each and every Web site project.

We've been so busy with our customers, that we didn't have the time to think about partnership programs or other similar stuff.

Having Six Apart contact us during 2007 and proposing us to become their Partner for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) was a surprise and a moment of great joy for our team.

In December 2007, at Le Web 3 in Paris, France I've myself had the pleasure to meet some of the Six Apart crew in person. I've gladly met Chris Alden (Six Apart CEO), Olivier Creiche (Six Apart VP and EMEA GM), Michel Voitoux (Six Apart Sales Director for EMEA), Maarten Schenk (Six Apart Coordinator for Europe) and a few other Six Apart folks.

And now let me quickly present you a bit of chronology about our relationship with Six Apart and Movable Type.

We've initially joined the Six Apart Professional Network way back in 2002, initially under a different name and later on under the PRO IT Service name.

Then we've joined the Movable Type Forum where we've also offered support on a few hundred of movable type support threads over the time.

During the second part of 2007 we've became Six Apart Partners for EMEA, and an Authorized Partner for Movable Type. At the time we've been invited by Six Apart to join their Partnership program, we've already been among those less than 10 service providers recommended by the Six Apart US Headquarter.

Since most of our movable type customers are from the US market we're having an ongoing excellent relationship with Six Apart USA.

Have you designed your Web site layout in Photo Shop and you would like to have somebody code it for you in Web site format? Look no further!

We're hand coding Web sites since 1997 and so we have over 11 years experience in this business. Things changed over the years.

At the moment we're hand coding web site templates using xhtml v1.0 transitional in combination with css v2.1.

Send us your design (in photo shop format or other) and we will hand code it for you as soon as possible in xhtml/css table less format.

Before going ahead with more technical details, I would like to let you know that we are usually hand coding Web site templates from the following design formats:

PSD2HTML - Adobe Photo Shop (.psd)

PNG2HTML - Adobe FireWorks (.png)

AI2HTML - Adobe Illustrator (.ai)

TIF2HTML - Tagged Image File (.tif or .tiff)

The work we will deliver to you will be:

Cross Platform Compatible

Since we have experience with the most popular browsers weaknesses, we will carefully code your project so that your Web site will look the same no matter what browser your Web site visitors will be using.

Search Engine Optimized

You are going to use this project on the web and so it is important to have your Web site compliant with what search engines are looking for in order to rank better a Web site.

Based on our experience, we will be coding your Web site layout following the search engine optimization guidelines.

Clean

As we're coding your Web site by hand, the source code will be so clean hat you could even follow it yourself. We aren't using web design tools that place a lot of useless stuff (garbage), but use our knowledge and place each and every coding line there with care.

This will assure in one hand that your code is as short as possible, and on the other than it is written in such a way that any web developer will be able to operate with it easily.

W3C Compliant

Nevertheless we're hand coding your project, it will be validated against the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) programming languages specifications. Before delivering the project to you we are going to double-check this and make sure the coding is 100% compliant with these quality standards.

Send your PSD file today and you will get a professionally coded Web site layout.
